Hunter Bishop OSU Hockey is on a seven-game goal-scoring streak

COLUMBUS, Ohio Buckeye sophomore Hunter Bishop’s first goal early in the first period stood as the gamewinner as the Ohio State men’s hockey team downed Clarkson, 2-0, Saturday in Value City Arena in the championship game of the Ohio Hockey Classic. Ohio State sophomore goalie Dustin Carlson stopped all 24 shots he faced saves in his fourth shutout of the season, as the Buckeyes, now 13-6-1 on the year, extended their winning streak to eight.

The tournament title is the second for the Buckeyes and the first since 2006. Buckeye senior forward Corey Elkins was voted the tournament’s MVP and was joined on the all-tournament team by teammates Carlson, Bishop and defenseman Shane Sims, along with Army’s Cody Omilusik and Clarkson’s Bryan Rufenach.

The Buckeyes led 1-0 after the first. Bishop extended his goal-scoring streak to seven when he dove at the rebound of a Sims shot and was able to poke the puck into the Clarkson net. Elkins also had an assist on the goal, moving his scoring streak to five. Sims has at least one point in each of his last six games. The Buckeyes outshot the Golden Knights, 15-4, in the period. Ohio State had the only power-play chance in the period and put just one shot on net with the man advantage.

The teams were scoreless in the second period. Carlson stopped all 10 shots he faced. Clarkson’s Paul Karpowich had five saves in the stanza. Ohio State held the Golden Knights scoreless on three power-play chances and the Buckeyes could not convert on two opportunities.

The Buckeyes stayed strong in the third period to hold on to the one-goal lead, with Carlson making 10 saves. The Buckeye PK had three stops, including an extended 5-on-3. Freshman Zac Dalpe closed the scoring with an empty-netter goal at 19:19, assisted by defensemen Corey Toy and Matt Bartkowski. Ohio State had 14 shots in the stanza and was 0-for-3 on the power play.

Postgame Notes
Ohio State has won its last eight games overall and 11 of its last 12. The squad is on a nine-game winning streak in Value City Arena. The unbeaten streak is tied for the second-longest in the nation.

The Buckeyes are 7-1-2 all-time in Ohio Hockey Classic play with two titles.

Elkins, who leads the team with 21 points, is on a five-game point streak (3-6-9). He had a tournament-best four points, tying the OHC record for points in a tournament.

Bishop is on a seven-game goal-scoring streak and has eight points in his last seven games combined. He is second on the team with nine goals this season.

Carlson has four shutouts this season, tying for the third-best in a single season for a Buckeye goalie. He now has a goals-against average of 2.04 and a .932 save percentage, along with an 11-3-0 ledger.

Sims is on a six-game point streak (1-7-8) and has two assists in two of his last three games.

“It was basically two on two with about fifteen feet in front of us of the net. It was a footrace and I knew he would probably get a stick on me and I went for the leap and got lucky. Our scouting report was to get a lot of pucks on net and rebound. We knew we would have to score a greasy goal and knew that the first shot wasn’t going to go in. It was our game plan coming in and we played smart on both blue lines not turning the puck over.”
